The Armies - Under construction...

Hard Core

The next installment of the Core troops have been posted in the Chaos Mortals gallery, four units of Marauders. Here's my favourite of the four. Mostly metal but with a few current plastics thrown in to make up the numbers.

I'm going to struggle to meet my end of month target for Chaos Mortals. I still have six units to re-base, two of which need repair work, a unit to paint and a terrain piece to finish... I was probably too ambitious to try and do in two weeks what I'm giving myself a month to do with the other armies. I'll probably need to eat a little into my Empire month of February; no harm done.

A start on the Core

Laid up with a cold, crap Saturday night TV; a good time for painting. The plan was to start with the Core but I forgot and a couple of Rares sneaked into a Chaos Spawn shaped gap on my painting tray. No harm done. Speaking of which... Isn't he gorgeous?

This photo and a bunch of other new pics have just been added to the Chaos Mortals page. It's filling up nicely.

I won the Chaos Void Gate on eBay mentioned previously and have done a fair bit of work on it. Shots later hopefully.

Progress

I finally found a few minutes to re-paint the bases on my Chaos Mortal characters to Mk III standard.

Let me introduce you to my Chaos Lord of Nurgle, His Grand Pustulence, Belch Colonsucker.

He's led my Chaos armies since the dawn of 6th edition; if only I could claim any credit for the conversion or painting but I can't. I saw him on eBay and loved him. I was prepared to pay silly money for him but luckily didn't have to.

Belch and the other characters have now been posted as the first additions to my Chaos Mortals photo page.

Chaos Mortals Roll Call

When this project first came to mind the idea was that I would focus on one army each calendar month. Each month I would paint all my unpainted figures for that army, buy and paint a unit or two to fill notable gaps, build and paint an item of themed scenery for that army and play at least a couple of games.

This is so not going to happen. Work commitments are heavier than ever (I teach) and I have other wargames irons in the fire including Warmachine and historicals. I've also realised that I have several thousand points of unpainted figures for some of my armies; more than I can manage in a month!

So the new plan is to still focus on one army each month but be a little less ambitious. I'll re-base all painted figures to my current system/standard, buy/paint a unit or two and build/paint some themed scenery if I don't already have some for that army. The priority will be to get a well balanced, fully painted and based 2000 point army on the table as soon as possible in the month to get the games in. It's all pointless if the games aren't happening.

Chaos Mortals were a good choice to kick things off. January is nearly gone and my Chaos is in a better state than most of my other armies. Here's a group shot of all my painted Chaos Mortal figures.

All of the above need re-basing to my Mk III standard. Some of them go right back to Mk I. A few of the Knights are chipped and a horse tail needs re-attaching. I'll follow the order Lords/Heroes, Core, Special, Rare and post pictures on the Chaos Mortal page (link above) as I go. After that there's some choice with regards to what new units I might paint.

I knew I had another Hell Cannon tucked away but had forgotten I had a bag of Chaos Warrior bitz in the cupboard. Adding these to the bitz I've got on old sprues I reckon I'm good for 30+ Warriors, so two units of 15/16 then? I also found a few Champion types and four Sorcerors; plenty to choose from. I'm thinking my first Khorne and Tzeentch units maybe, with matching Champions.

Scenery? A Chaos Warp Gate should fit the bill. Rather lazily I won't be starting from scratch and will be using one of these as a base.

More soon...

The 6th Edition Library

I found a useful thread on whfb.lexicanum when I first started considering this 'project' listing all of the army books, campaign supplements and such released during 6th edition. I'd hung on to most of them, bought a couple back and still need a couple more to fill my last gaps. The whfb.lexicanum page has pictures to avoid confusion with earlier and later releases.

Return of the Sixth - My project for 2015 and beyond.

Warhammer Fantasy Battle 8th edition killed fantasy wargaming for me and for almost all my friends. This blog will relate my efforts to return to the glory days of 6th edition; the first I played. I have several thousand points for most of the available armies. Over the next months I plan to spruce them up and get them on the table. Expect battle reports and eventually a huge solo map campaign.

I want to spend one month on souping up each army. Buying and painting figures to fill any gaps, rebasing to match my current scheme, building themed terrain and playing battles. Each army will get it's own page with a photocatalogue eventually recording my whole collection.

It takes two to tango so I'll need to sort two armies to 'get going'. Hence, I have decided to allow myself a two month starter session to prepare two armies at once. Jan/Feb will be all about Chaos Mortals and the Empire.

Watch this space.
